Junior Chamber of Commerce
|
The concept of a Junior Chamber of Commerce for Sachem students came about at one of the Sachem School Business
Alliance meetings. Through the efforts of Rick Ammirati, President of the Holbrook Chamber, Fred Coste, Treasurer,
and Nancy Armstrong, Sachem School Business Alliance Coordinator, students are invited to attend meetings and
volunteer to help with special events such as the Easter Egg Hunt and Cleanup Day. Since most students are not
familiar with organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce, this was just one way to introduce them to the types
of projects/events that the chamber fosters.
The mission of the Holbrook chamber is to promote business, provide information about the town, and to take a
leadership role in promoting community pride and recognition through town beautification and economic enhancement
for all of their members.
Students could identify with the projects being discussed and obtain a behind-the-scenes look at how projects to
beautify and revitalize their community came about.
Through the cooperative efforts of the Chamber’s leadership with officials from the towns of Islip and Brookhaven,
as well as the County of Suffolk and the Sachem School District, students were made aware of the importance of how
the selfless dedication of a handful of individuals can bring about these projects, how they are initiated and
carried out for the benefit of the entire community.
