8th Annual Job Shadow Day
with the Rotary of the Ronkonkomas

On Thursday, November 16, 2006 over 100 Sachem North and East students had the unique opportunity to “shadow” various members in the Rotary Club of the Ronkonkomas, the Sachem School Business Alliance, and the Ronkonkoma Chamber of Commerce.

Job shadowing activities allow all students to explore an occupation in greater detail than afforded by a field trip. Students learn by spending a few hours at the worksite observing or shadowing an adult mentor as he/she goes through a normal day on the job. The student does not necessarily do any actual work, although he/she may ask questions and be allowed to perform small tasks. This experience also provides an up-close look at how the skills learned in school are put into action in the workplace, which makes schoolwork more relevant for the students

Mentors can explain the needs of area employers and future needs in the marketplace. In addition, students can learn what educational background and skills are necessary, as well as benefits, advantages, and disadvantages of this career. This valuable information will assist them in making decisions about pursuing a specific career and how to be successful in the 21st Century.

Job shadow mentors include many varied professions in the local community ranging from accountant, architect, attorney, banking and financial services, education, electronics, law enforcement, social work, and veterinarian, just to name a few. These volunteers are members of the Sachem School Business Alliance and other local organizations such as the Rotary of the Ronkonkomas, the MacArthur Business Alliance, and the Ronkonkoma Chamber of Commerce and Holbrook Chamber of Commerce.
